Sound!Start Phonics for Letters and Sounds Complete SSP Programme

Online Training for Letters and Sounds (2007)

If you wish to explore an SSP which is:

  • based on the Letters and Sounds progression

  • follows a whole-class mastery approach

  • predominantly uses Collins Big Cat for Letters and Sounds reading books

Why not find out more about our new complete programme?

From Spring 2022 Letters and Sounds will no longer be included on the DfE’s list of validated SSPs. However, schools may continue to follow Letters and Sounds IF they have evaluated their practice and provision and are confident that their approach is “rigorous, systematic, used with fidelity (any resources used should exactly match the Grapheme Phoneme Correspondence (GPC) progression of their chosen SSP approach), and achieves strong results for all pupils, including the most disadvantaged.” Current DfE guidance states it is not mandatory for schools to follow a validated programme and OFSTED do not have a preferred programme or approach.
The Sound!Start Phonics ONLINE Letters and Sounds (2007) training modules are ideal if you have decided to continue with your current Letters and Sounds approach and wish to provide refresher training or training for new members of staff.

If you would like expert support with reviewing and evaluating your current “Letters and Sounds” approach, get in touch to arrange an audit of practice and provision.  Full and half day sessions are currently available during the summer and autumn terms

Hi! I’m Alex Finn.  I’m a Phonics and Literacy professional with just over 20 years’ experience working in Early Years and Primary education as a teacher, senior leader and consultant.  I am also the founder of Sound!Start Phonics for Letters and Sounds.  I love teaching and talking about phonics and am particularly passionate about the Letters and Sounds programme, having used it very effectively in my own teaching and when working with other schools.  I am known for my extensive subject knowledge and enthusiastic delivery; and my ability to engage and enthuse others has enabled me to inspire excellent classroom practice in a wide range of settings.  I offer a range of training and support programmes including full-day and twilight INSET sessions, centre-based training, audits of provision and focused consultancy support, all of which can be tailored to meet the needs of your school or academy.  I am always up to date with the latest educational reports and ensure my training reflects current DFE and OFSTED guidance as well as EEF recommendations for developing effective phonics practice and provision.

I am committed to the role parents can play in their child’s education and offer parent workshops which provide hands-on guidance for parents to support their child’s learning at home.  My Pupil Premium workshops have proved to be highly successful in engaging parents and accelerating progress for vulnerable children and are an effective use of Pupil Premium Funding. Over the past few years I have developed a range of classroom resources for teachers and teaching assistants to use in their delivery of daily phonics lessons and additional targeted intervention sessions.  The resources are fully matched to the Letters and Sounds programme and provide a colour-coded system for Letters and Sounds which supports practitioners to carefully match their teaching input and lesson resources to the progression it outlines and the specific learning needs of each child.  It also provides a clear way of organising learning into smaller chunks which are memorable for young children.  I have recently added a Letters and Sounds Assessment Tool to my resource collection which provides easy-to-use assessment and analysis materials for tracking progress and attainment from Phase Two to Phase Five of the Letters and Sounds programme. To find out more about my experience and the impact of the work I’ve done with different settings, please read more about me and the testimonials or get in touch to speak to me personally.
